Rush Limbaugh: Democrats and Bernie Sanders pose greater threat to U.S. than coronavirus

Rush Limbaugh claimed Wednesday the Democratic Party and its current front-runner for president, Sen. Bernard Sanders, are more dangerous to the U.S. than the deadly coronavirus. The conservative radio show host made the claim while defending a remark he made the previous day about Mr. Sanders, a Vermont independent and self-described democratic socialist. “I opened the program yesterday asking which is more dangerous for the country, Bernie Sanders or the coronavirus? And I said Bernie Sanders, of course. I’ve gotten some pushback on that,” he said on “The Rush Limbaugh Show.” “But think about it,” Mr. Limbaugh continued. “The coronavirus has a mortality rate of 2%. The mortality rate for countries with socialism is 100%. Socialism kills every country it comes in contact with, folks. Socialism destroys wealth — everybody’s wealth except the leaders. Socialism destroys liberty. It destroys freedom. It destroys prosperity. It destroys dreams. Socialism destroys 100%. every country it comes in contact with.” Mr. Limbaugh, a staunch supporter of President Trump, subsequently claimed there’s “no question” that both Mr. Sanders and the Democratic Party “poses a far greater threat” to the U.S. than the coronavirus, which has been connected to the deaths of more than 2,700 of the 80,000-plus people known to have contracted the disease since its discovery in December. “I mean to say that. The Democrat Party, as it’s currently constituted, poses a much greater threat to this country than the coronavirus does. And you can quote me on that,” Mr. Limbaugh said. Representatives for neither the Democratic National Committee nor the Sanders campaign immediately answered requests for comment. Mr. Limbaugh, who was recently awarded the President Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, has been highly critical of media coverage of the coronavirus as concerns swell of the outbreak reaching pandemic proportions. He claimed during Monday’s show that the coronavirus is being “weaponized” by the media to bring down Mr. Trump, and on Tuesday’s program he questioned the intentions of Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who recently warned Americans that the coronavirus is certain to spread. “This person running this agency, who does she donate to?” Mr. Limbaugh asked. “Most of that town is establishment-oriented or -rooted, which means they despise Trump.”

Opinion: The Era of Limbaugh

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis spoke to Rush Limbaugh last fall at a gala dinner for the National Review Institute. The radio host was there to receive the William F. Buckley Jr. award. “He actually gave me one of the greatest compliments I’ve ever had,” Limbaugh told his audience the next day. “He listed five great conservatives and put me in the list.” DeSantis’s pantheon: William F. Buckley Jr., Ronald Reagan, Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, and Limbaugh. Good list. No media figure since Buckley has had a more lasting influence on American conservatism than Limbaugh, whose cumulative weekly audience is more than 20 million people. Since national syndication in 1988, Limbaugh has been the voice of conservatism, his three-hour program blending news, politics, and entertainment in a powerful and polarizing cocktail. His shocking announcement this week that he has advanced lung cancer, and his appearance at the State of the Union, where President Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, are occasions to reflect on his impact. It’s one thing to excel in your field. It’s another to create the field in which you excel. Conservative talk radio was local and niche before Limbaugh. He was the first to capitalize on regulatory and technological changes that allowed for national scale. The repeal of the Fairness Doctrine in 1987 freed affiliates to air controversial political opinions without inviting government scrutiny. As music programming migrated to the FM spectrum, AM bandwidth welcomed talk. Listener participation was also critical. “It was not until 1982,” writes Nicole Hemmer in Messengers of the Right, “that AT&T introduced the modern direct-dial toll-free calling system that national call-in shows use.” Limbaugh made the most of these opportunities. And he contributed stylistic innovations of his own. He treated politics not only as a competition of ideas but also as a contest between liberal elites and the American public. He also added the irreverent and sometimes scandalous humor and cultural commentary of the great DJs. He introduced catchphrases still in circulation: “dittohead,” “Drive-By media,” “feminazi,” “talent on loan from God.” The template he created has been so successful that the list of his imitators on both the left and right is endless. Even Al Franken wanted in on the act. Dostoyevsky is attributed with the saying that the great Russian writers “all came out of Gogol’s ‘Overcoat.’” Political talk show hosts came out of Limbaugh’s microphone. Limbaugh’s success prefigured more than the rise of conservative radio. His two bestsellers, The Way Things Ought to Be (1992) and See, I Told You So (1993), were the leading edge of the conservative publishing boom. And his television program, The Rush Limbaugh Show, produced in collaboration with Roger Ailes, was a forerunner of the opinion programming on Fox News Channel. “I had to learn how to take being hated as a measure of success,” he told a Boy Scouts awards dinner in 2009. “Nobody’s raised for that. And the person that taught me to deal with this and to remain psychologically healthy was Roger Ailes.” Limbaugh is not fringe. His views fit in the conservative mainstream. He idolizes Buckley. “He was a fundamental individual in helping me to be able to explain what I believed instinctively, helping me to explain it to others,” Limbaugh said last year. The ideas are the same but the salesman is different. Limbaugh is Buckley without the accent, without the Yale credentials, without the sailboat and harpsichord. Limbaugh is a college dropout from Cape Girardeau, Mo., who spends Sundays watching the NFL and speaks in plain language. His background connects him to the audience — and to the increasingly working-class Republican voter. Limbaugh entered stage right just as Ronald Reagan was making his exit. He took from Reagan the sense that America’s future is bright, that America isn’t broken, just its liberal political, media, and cultural elites. “He rejected Washington elitism and connected directly with the American people who adored him,” Limbaugh said after Reagan’s death. “He didn’t need the press. He didn’t need the press to spin what he was or what he said. He had the ability to connect individually with each American who saw him.” The two men never met. Limbaugh assumed Reagan’s position as leader of the conservative movement. In a letter sent to Limbaugh after the 1992 election, Reagan wrote, “Now that I’ve retired from active politics, I don’t mind that you have become the Number One voice for conservatism in our Country. I know the liberals call you the most dangerous man in America, but don’t worry about it, they used to say the same thing about me. Keep up the good work. America needs to hear ‘the way things ought to be.’” In a long and evenhanded cover story in 1993 by James Bowman, National Review pronounced Limbaugh “the leader of the opposition.” Bowman quoted R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr., editor of The American Spectator. “We need to have people who can dramatize ideas,” Tyrrell said. “You need that literary spark. Luigi Barzini had it; Buckley has it. And, though he’s a great talker rather than a great writer, Rush has it too.” More than a decade later, after the Republican defeat in 2008, Limbaugh once again stepped into the breach. The media likened Barack Obama to FDR. Republicans wavered. Should they cooperate with President Obama in building a “New Foundation” for America? Limbaugh gave his answer on January 16, 2009. “I’ve been listening to Barack Obama for a year and a half,” he said. “I know what his politics are. I know what his plans are, as he has stated them. I don’t want them to succeed.” Limbaugh said he hoped Obama failed. “Liberalism is our problem. Liberalism is what’s gotten us dangerously close to the precipice here. Why do I want more of it?” The monologue, and the speech he delivered to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C., a month later, became a sensation. They set the tone for the Tea Party and Republican victories in 2010 and 2014. Limbaugh did not mock Trump when the businessman announced his presidential campaign in June 2015. “This is going to resonate with a lot of people, I guarantee you, and the Drive-Bys are going to pooh-pooh it,” he said. He spent the primary reminding listeners of the importance of defeating Hillary Clinton. Trump was not an ideological candidate, he said. Trump was a missile aimed at the establishment. If ideology matters, then you should vote for Ted Cruz. “If conservatism is your bag, if conservatism is the dominating factor in how you vote,” Limbaugh said in February 2016, “there is no other choice for you in this campaign than Ted Cruz, because you are exactly right: This is the closest in our lifetimes we have ever been to Ronald Reagan.” But, Limbaugh added, the feeling in the country might be so anti-establishment that Trump’s unusual coalition could win the presidency. It did. To say that Limbaugh supports the president would be an understatement. Last December he introduced the president at a Turning Point USA summit. He mentioned a recent encounter on a golf course. Someone told him it is hard to defend President Trump. “I said, ‘What? Hard to defend the president? It’s one of the easiest things in the world to do.’ President Trump does not need to be defended.” The crowd cheered. A few seconds later Limbaugh said, “How do you defend Donald Trump? You attack the people who are attempting to destroy him. They’re trying to destroy you. They’re trying to transform this country into something that it was not founded to be.” Bold, brash, divisive, funny, and amped up, President Trump’s style is similar to a shock jockey’s. His presidency is another reminder of Limbaugh’s staying power. The American right has been molded in his anti-elitist, grassroots, demotic, irreverent, patriotic, hard-charging image. Rush Limbaugh is not just a talk show host. He defines an era.

Even Rush calls it “the Era of Limbaugh.”  Indeed..  Hearing about Rush’s cancer diagnosis was shocking.  And, here at The Daily Buzz we’re all praying for ya Rush!  If anyone can beat cancer, he can.  That being said…  Rush wears a cochlear implant as he is totally deaf.  Think about that..  He is a radio show host, who is completely deaf.  I remember listening to his show back in 2003 or 2004 when he made the announcement that he’d have to go off the air for a while as he had become deaf.  We were all devastated then…and then he came back.  He’s a fighter!   Thanks to Matthew Continetti for that piece.

Rush Limbaugh announces he has ‘advanced lung cancer’

Talk radio king Rush Limbaugh stunned his 20-million member audience Monday with the announcement he’s been diagnosed with “advanced lung cancer.” The 69-year-old conservative talk pioneer closed his broadcast with the grim news, saying he will be leaving his golden EIB microphone for treatment, but hopes to return later this week. “This day has been one of the most difficult days in recent memory, for me, because I’ve known this moment was coming,” Limbaugh said. “I’m sure that you all know by now that I really don’t like talking about myself and I don’t like making things about me… one thing that I know, that has happened over the 31-plus years of this program is that there has been an incredible bond that had developed between all of you and me.” The radio icon then told his audience that his job has provided him with the “greatness satisfaction and happiness” of his life. “So, I have to tell you something today that I wish I didn’t have to tell you. It’s a struggle for me because I had to inform my staff earlier today,” he said. “I can’t help but feel that I’m letting everybody down. The upshot is that I have been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer.” Limbaugh told listeners that the disease will keep him off the air on certain days when he’ll receive treatment. He said two medical institutions confirmed the diagnosis since he first realized something was wrong on Jan. 12 when he experienced shortness of breath. “I thought about not telling anybody,” he said. “It is what it is. You know me, I’m the mayor of Realville. This has happened and my intention is to come here every day I can, and do this program as normally and competently and expertly as I do each and every day because that is the source of my greatest satisfaction professionally, personally.” “I told the staff today that I have a deeply personal relationship with God that I do not proselytize about, but I do, and I have been working that relationship tremendously,” he said. “I am, at the moment, experiencing zero symptoms.” Limbaugh said he will undergo further testing and planned to “push ahead and keep everything as normal” as he could. “I felt that I had to tell you because that’s the kind of relationship that I feel like I have with those of you in this audience,” he said. “Over the years, a lot of people have been very nice, telling me how much this program has meant to them but, whatever that is, it pales in comparison to what you all have meant to me.” The radio veteran — widely considered one of the most powerful voices in conservative media — said he “can’t describe” the feeling but he’s aware his audience understood him. “The rest of the world may not,” Limbaugh said. “But, I know that you do.” Limbaugh called his listener base one of “the greatest sources of confidence” that he’s ever had in his life. “I hope I will be talking about this as little as necessary in the coming days, but we’ve got a great bunch of doctors, a great team assembled, we’re at full speed ahead on this,” Limbaugh said. “It’s just now a matter of implementing what we are going to be told later this week.” He said he “hopes” to be back on Thursday. “If not, it’ll be as soon as I can,” Limbaugh said. “Every day I’m not here, I’ll be thinking of you and missing you.”

And we’ll be missing you, and praying for you here at The Daily Buzz, Rush  So, hang in there!  I started listening to Rush back in the early ’90s shortly after Clinton was elected, and then read his first two books.  He inspired and motivated me to get involved in local politics.  His fans, called “dittoheads,” are legion.  We’re all pulling for ya, Rush!  For more on this story, click on the text above.

Limbaugh: GOP Must Confirm Kavanaugh or Kiss Midterms Goodbye

So Chairman Grassley has a job to do here, because, if he gives Democrats enough time, they’ll produce a woman claiming to be Kavanaugh’s secret Russian wife who Trump paid to urinate on that bed in Moscow. If Grassley waits long enough, the Democrats will come up with the woman claiming to be Kavanaugh’s secret Russian wife. — he’s a bigamist, too, don’t you know — and Trump paid Kavanaugh’s second wife to hire a bunch of prostitutes to urinate on the bed Obama slept in while in Moscow. If Grassley doesn’t get a handle on this and just do — and I’ll tell you something else, which everybody also knows. If the Republicans do not get this vote taken and have Kavanaugh confirmed, you can kiss the midterms goodbye. You can kiss goodbye holding the House and you can kiss goodbye holding the Senate. Because whatever the Democrats think of their base, the one thing I know that if you guys fold on this and cave and keep bending over backwards… You’ve done that enough. You’ve demonstrated that you don’t hate women. You’ve demonstrated that you’re open minded. You’ve demonstrated that you’re gonna hear from her. You’re never gonna hear from her! She’s never gonna show up. She’s not telling a story that can be verified, Senator Grassley. She’s not gonna show up. If you guys don’t conduct this vote in defiance of all this and if Avenatti gets one foot in the door to a Senate committee to start telling his story, then you can kind of kiss good-bye Republican chances in the midterms in November. Because people are gonna logically say, “What good does it do?”

Agreed!  Worse..  If Judge Kavanaugh is not confirmed, Republican voters will sit out the midterms altogether, and that so-called “blue wave” will come to fruition.  The “silent majority” voted for Donald Trump so that he could fix the economy and put conservative judges on the Supreme Court and other federal courts.  If this supremely (pun intended) qualified jurist with decades of experience and an impeccable record isn’t confirmed, Senate Republicans will face the wrath of their voter base…and rightly so.  Thanks to Rush Limbaugh for saying what needs to be said.  Dittos Rush!!

Rush Limbaugh: Mueller’s team proving ‘dual system of justice at the highest levels’

Radio host Rush Limbaugh says special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation is proving to millions of citizens that a “dual system of justice” exists in America. The man behind the “Golden EIB microphone” told listeners on Wednesday that a large population of Americans view legal battles surrounding President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, along ex-campaign chairman Paul Manafort, very differently than political pundits. Mr. Limbaugh said that the U.S. Department of Justice’s handling of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s secret email server, particularly when juxtaposed with law enforcement’s focus on Mr. Trump, demonstrates a dangerous development. “There is clearly now a double standard, a dual system of justice at the highest levels of our Department of Justice,” the conservative said. “You can see it in the way the DOJ and the FBI exonerated the Democrat presidential candidate when real crimes were taking place for years and years right under their noses, crimes they perhaps even participated in.” “Those crimes, because they involved the Democrat nominee, were exonerated. The Democrat nominee herself was exonerated,” he continued. “You go to the Trump campaign, the Republican, the opponent, where there aren’t any crimes, there wasn’t any collusion with Russia, there hasn’t been any obstruction of justice, and yet this is where the allegation of crimes is occurring? And it’s occurring with people who are peripheral to the original charge of all this — Russian collusion, stealing the election?” Mr. Limbaugh added that members of the media are essentially casting Mr. Mueller as a “sitting supreme branch of government who has the power to oversee the Trump administration” on a daily basis. “What makes it really frightening, and the reason people are losing faith in some of the greatest institutions this country’s ever had, leading with the Department of Justice, is because it’s plain as day what I just pointed out to you: There is a dual system of justice in this country. If you’re a Democrat you’re going to be exonerated or given one hell of a benefit of the doubt. If you’re Republican, you’re gonna be presumed guilty, and a never-ending pursuit to get you will then commence.” The host’s comments came in the wake of Mr. Cohen’s guilty plea to eight criminal charges in federal court in Manhattan, which include bank fraud, tax evasion and campaign finance violations. Mr. Manafort was found guilty of eight financial crimes in an Alexandria, Virginia, courtroom. Charges included filing false tax returns, failing to report foreign bank accounts in 2012 and bank fraud charges. “Robert Mueller, as I said yesterday, and his team are plowing through the Constitution. They’re shredding it as they go,” Mr. Limbaugh said. “None of this is about collusion with the Russians to steal an election. These people have an unlimited charter, Mueller, to go anywhere with the express purpose of overturning the results of the election in 2016.”

As usual, “El Rushbo” nails it!  “Dittos” Rush!!

Limbaugh: Jim Acosta’s peers upset that voters can finally stand up to ‘garbage people’ insults

Rush Limbaugh says journalists who chastise the behavior of President Trump’s supporters at rallies are really upset that Americans can respond to “garbage human” insults in 2018. The man behind the “golden EIB” microphone celebrated 30 years on air by telling listeners how much has changed over the decades. Mr. Trump’s Tuesday rally in Tampa, Florida, along with anger over the heckling of CNN’s Jim Acosta, prompted a monologue on media bias. “Let me just share with you a report here from somebody at Politico,” the conservative said. “‘Politico reporter Marc Caputo mocked attendees of President Donald Trump’s Tampa rally Tuesday night, referring to them as toothless ‘garbage people.’ After nearly 11 hours, Caputo posts an apology. ‘I need to apologize for tweeting caustic remarks after seeing a reporter berated & abused. Hate begets hate. My comments referred ONLY to those jeering and swearing at the man, not a broad swath of people. But the fault is mine for causing confusion and feeding anger.’” At issue were rally attendees who shouted “CNN sucks” while the network’s chief White House correspondent spoke with colleague Wolf Blitzer. Mr. Limbaugh essentially said that modern technology and various social media platforms allow viewers to regularly see that they are viewed with contempt by journalists. “[Trump voters are] basically a bunch of disjointed, angry people who cannot adapt to the transforming of American culture and society [to reporters],” Mr. Limbaugh said. “They are a bunch of toothless, brain-dead people sitting on the deck out in front of the shack playing the banjo as Burt Reynolds and the boys go rafting by. That’s what [reporters] think of your average Trump voter, and this guy just happened to let it out.” The radio host also asserted that Mr. Acosta “secretly and privately loves” the attention he’s getting because he goes out of his way to be adversarial with the president. “Outside of this, he’s a typical CNN no-name,” Mr. Limbaugh said. “But Trump and his administration have singled him out because Acosta decides to play rude, decides to be a provocateur. He knows Trump is gonna hit back, and I’ve maintained that Acosta loves it secretly every time it happens.” “Acosta gets to go out and play like he’s actually at war and that there are real bullets being fired and he’s risking his life to go to a Trump rally and report what’s going on there,” he continued. “What they really can’t stand is that Trump still sells out and the people there are still madly in love with and totally supportive of Trump.”

Exactly!!  And well said, Rush!  As usual, “El Rushbo” nails it with an insight that nobody else talks about.  Jim probably DOES relish the spotlight…and yet he’s such a brazen disingenuous, liberal hypocrite.  Anyway..  Congrats to Rush on his 30 year anniversary behind the “golden EIB microphone!”  We hope you’re around another 30!  “Dittos!!”   🙂

Rush Limbaugh: Hannity is ‘three times as honest’ as ‘incestuous’ Washington media

Rush Limbaugh says outrage over Fox News star Sean Hannity’s ties to attorney Michael Cohen is an act of deception by the media’s real partisans. The man behind the “golden EIB microphone” told listeners on Tuesday that “incestuous” media professionals are focused on Mr. Hannity’s friendship with President Trump’s lawyer as a distraction for less informed viewers. The revelation about Mr. Cohen’s relationship to Mr. Hannity came days after an FBI raid on the lawyer’s offices in connection with its Russia investigation. The Fox News host issued a statement on Monday saying he “never retained [Mr. Cohen], received an invoice, or paid legal fees” during “brief discussions” on legal matters. “Every one of these Drive-By Media hypocrites that are going on and on and on about conflict of interest regarding Sean Hannity would be the first people to accept an up-close and personal relationship with Barack Obama any day of the week, Hillary Clinton any day of the week, and they wouldn’t have any problem covering it up,” Mr. Limbaugh said. “They would all brag about it. They all strive, they all wanted to impress Obama, they wanted to be in Obama’s inner circle.” “Sean Hannity has not withheld anything from anybody about anything that he’s doing here. Sean Hannity is more honest, three times as honest as anybody you can pluck from the Drive-By Media doing their jobs each and every day. Each and every day they are engaging in deceit to try to hide from you the close ties that they all have with each other,” the radio host continued. “Washington, D.C., is an incestuous revolving door. And Sean Hannity is not part of the Drive-By Media, Washington, D.C., establishment.” Mr. Limbaugh then played recent footage of journalists and pundits before stating their influential networks within the capital. To see that list, click here.

As usual, El Rushbo is exactly right.  And, good on him for standing up for Sean.  Dittos Rush!    🙂

Rush Limbaugh: Schumer, Dems caved on shutdown because ‘Trump went on offense’

Radio host Rush Limbaugh says there is a simple reason why a short-lived government shutdown ended Monday: President Trump “went on offense.” The man behind “the golden EIB microphone” told listeners this week that Democrats were so caught off guard by “Schumer Shutdown” attacks that they did a political U-turn after three days. Mr. Limbaugh said the Republicans’ refusal to negotiate on Saturday, coupled with rhetorical broadsides against Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, constituted a political masterstroke. “When was the last time the GOP won a shutdown showdown?” the conservative asked. “When was the first time the GOP ever won a shutdown showdown? Yet Trump has won a shutdown showdown.” Mr. Limbaugh said that Democrats “wanted this [shutdown] to go on through the State of the Union,” but were forced to retreat after Mr. Trump proactively took control of the narrative. “It sounds to me like that Schumer and the Democrats expected the Republicans to cave, and Trump did not cave. And the Democrats know they’re on thin ice on this and so Trump wins,” the radio host said. They just didn’t count on the fact that — and this is beyond me why they didn’t — but they didn’t count on the fact of Trump returning fire. Not just returning fire, Trump went on offense.” The deal struck by lawmakers on Monday, which includes a promise for a Senate debate on immigration reform, will keep the government running through Feb. 8. “I am pleased that Democrats in Congress have come to their senses and are now willing to fund our great military, border patrol, first responders, and insurance for vulnerable children,” Mr. Trump said in a statement. “As I have always said, once the Government is funded, my Administration will work toward solving the problem of very unfair illegal immigration. We will make a long-term deal on immigration if, and only if, it is good for our country.”

Us usual, “El Rushbo” nails it!    🙂

Limbaugh: Timing of Flynn Charges ‘May Not Be Coincidental’ — ‘Look at All the News It Has Swept Off the Front Pages’

Friday on his nationally syndicated radio show, conservative talker Rush Limbaugh questioned the timing of the announcement former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn had been charged by special counsel Robert Mueller for lying to the FBI. Limbaugh suggested the timing of the news was to draw the attention away from passage of the tax bill among other items in the news, including the Matt Lauer firing from NBC and the “not guilty” verdict in the Kate Steinle murder trial. “So there you have it – they’re all excited,” Limbaugh said. “Mueller did the deed on the right day. Mueller did the deed to sweep the tax cut deal off the table and to tick everybody off. This is, in Jonathan Martin’s opinion, the swamp banding together – the establishment coordinating its efforts to continue to destroy Trump and muddy the waters. The tax bill is going to pass. As far as [Mitch] McConnell and [Paul] Ryan are concerned, none of this today is a legal problem.” “It’s a bit of a political problem, but it doesn’t present any legal problems to them or their tax bill,” he continued. “The tax bill is going to pass. But I don’t have any doubt that the timing of this thing today may not be coincidental. Just look at all the news it has swept off the front pages and look what it put back on the front page: ‘Trump colluded with the Russians to steal the election from Hillary.’”

As usual, “El Rushbo” knocks it out of the park.  It was NO coincidence this was announced today.  And, Rush is right in that it just sweeps all the other news away, including last night’s shocking and inexplicable verdict in the Kate Steinle murder trial where her murderer was found “not guilty” by a San Fran jury.  Outrageous!  Anyway, despite the orgasms being had over at CNN and MSNBC, this (so far) is nothing.  After all, Flynn was fired by Trump for exactly these reasons; lying.   So, nothing new here at all.  He’s just throwing a hail marry to minimize any jail time..

Rush Limbaugh: Steve Bannon Is ‘Taking Over the Role of the Republican Party’

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh said this week that Breitbart News Executive Chairman and former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon is “taking over the role of the Republican Party” as he looks to support conservative challengers to establishment lawmakers in 2018. “I think what Bannon is doing is slowly but surely taking over the role of the Republican Party, and people joining Bannon are [doing the same],” he said Wednesday. “The Republican Party is obviously not with [President] Trump on balance — you have some in the House who are — but the Republican Party on balance is not with Trump.” Bannon was one of the main populist/nationalist voices in the Trump White House, fighting to keep Trump true to the “America First” platform which catapulted him into the Oval Office. Since Bannon’s departure, Trump appears to have been tempted by the establishment siren song coming from the donor class, GOP congressional leaders, and the “West Wing Democrats” on a number of issues, including DACA and Afghanistan. But the establishment was dealt a serious blow last month when Judge Roy Moore beat the establishment-backed Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL) in the Alabama Senate primary, despite Strange outspending Moore by as much as 10-1. This has led to widespread speculation in the media that Bannon-backed conservative candidates could pose a serious threat to establishment candidates in 2018. Limbaugh argued that this development comes as the Republican elite has cozied up with donors and Democrats while ignoring the voices of the people who voted them into office: ” Some people make an argument that there really isn’t a Republican Party left. I mean, there are people who call themselves that and they go out and raise money and they raise a lot. But whereas the party used to be known for one, two, or three very serious things, they’re not anymore. When the Republican Party joins the Democratic Party on things like amnesty for illegal immigrants — that’s not the Republican Party. The Republican Party ceases to exist in the area of immigration, for example.” Limbaugh went on to argue that Bannon and his allies are trying to keep the identity of the Republican Party alive as the Republicans in Congress are joining Democrats on “issue after issue.” “The Republican party is the fundraising arm of the House and the Senate and their lobbyist buddies — that’s who Bannon is running against,” he said. “They’re running against the Republican establishment is what’s going on and, in the process, becoming the Republican Party.”
