New book claims Amelia Earhart was taken prisoner by Japanese during WWII

With just hours to go before the calendar flips to 2016, social media is abuzz with a new theory on: What happened to Amelia Earhart? And just when you think the theories couldn’t get more incredible, this one appears to be … one for books. Author W.C. Jameson, in his new book “Amelia Earhart: Beyond the Grave,” claims the great female aviator who disappeared in 1937 was actually on a secret spying mission authorized by Franklin D. Roosevelt when she vanished. Jameson claims to have found evidence showing Earhart’s plane was equipped with cameras to record Japanese military installations in the Pacific Ocean when it lost contact in the Marshall Islands. The author writes that Earhart and her co-pilot Fred Noonan were shot down or landed in Japanese territory and held prisoner. Jameson’s book — set to debut Jan. 5 — goes on to claim the Roosevelt administration — which he says knew of her fate — made no attempts to rescue her because the president did not want to admit the famed, female aviator was used for a spy mission. When Earhart was freed in 1945, she returned to the United States under a new identity — Irene Craigmile Bolam — so as not to embarrass Roosevelt, according to Jameson. The author claims Earhart lived out her life in the U.S. and died in 1982. Earhart and Noonan disappeared somewhere over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937, during her second attempt to circumnavigate the globe by air. Earhart was 41 years old at the time. Dozens of theories about the nature of Earhart’s death have sprung up over the years. It remains one of the most debated unsolved mysteries in America even today. The longstanding official theory is that the plane ran out of gas, crashed and sank into very deep ocean waters somewhere off Howland Island, a tiny speck that the pair missed. Various teams who believe the crashed-and-sank theory —an explanation supported by curators at the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum — have tried to pinpoint the crash location using sophisticated equipment to scan the ocean floor and employing computer models, based on the strength of Earhart’s radio transmissions. No one has found a verified plane part or bone fragment.

Farrakhan attacks Trump, and his followers

The Minister Louis Farrakhan has a warning for the American public: “If Donald Trump becomes president, he will take America into the abyss of hell.” That’s the message that the controversial Nation of Islam leader delivered in a recent video that was posted to his Facebook page. In it, Farrakhan said that Trump has certainly “done great things in the business world,” but charged that the Republican presidential candidate is “exacerbating the race situation in America.” “Mr. Trump is tearing away the skin of the onion of white civility and the more he pulls the skin of that onion back, he’s beginning to show something in the character of the whites that follow him, that they don’t care what he says,” Farrakhan said. “He could say one thing this minute, another thing the next minute and you can see that the man has a little problem.” He then proceeded to warn about what he believes will happen if Trump becomes president. “He’ll take America exactly where America is heading. He’ll take you there on a rocket ship,” Farrakhan continued. “If he becomes your president, you’ll be just like him. … When you get leadership that is not rooted in justice, then they begin to make the people just like themselves.” At the end of the segment, he warned that America should be careful before choosing Trump. “You’re headed into the abyss of hell, and if you make a mistake in choosing your leaders, maybe you’ll go there faster,” Farrakhan said.

New Year’s Surprise: Obama Regulation To Give Work-Permits To Foreign College-Graduates

As the nation prepares to ring in the New Year, President Barack Obama is preparing a colossal new executive action that could print-up work permits for a huge number of foreign white-collar graduates every year, above and beyond the levels set by Congress. This executive action, which directly bypasses Congressional lawmakers, is likely to reverberate across the presidential race, as GOP voters look to choose a nominee they believe will most effectively roll back the President’s still-expanding agenda. And it will certainly raise new security concerns as it covers categories of immigration utilized by migrants from the Middle East and nearby regions. President Barack Obama’s Department of Homeland Security plans to publish the proposed rule tomorrow, the last day of 2015. The 181-page rule focuses primarily on giving work-permits to foreign college-grads who will compete against Americans for white collar jobs, despite the large number of American graduates now stuck in lower-wage positions and struggling to pay off college debts. The rule will also make each foreign graduate much cheaper for U.S. employers to hire than many U.S.-born college grads. “Obama has gone the Full Monty to bust the immigration system,” says immigration lawyer John Miano. “What is going on is he is effectively giving Green Cards to people on H-1B visas who are unable to get Green Cards due to the [annual] quotas… it could be over 100,000.” The new rules to aid foreign college-graduates are an extension of his earlier efforts to bypass popular laws against illegal immigration, said Miano, the co-author of a new book about the painful impact of the white-collar guest-worker programs, titled “Sold Out.” This executive action could have been prevented, however, had the bipartisan 2016 omnibus funding included language proposed by Immigration Subcommittee Chairman Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL). In April, Sessions proposed language to reduce and cap the number of work-permits — dubbed “Employment Authorization Documents” — that could be distributed to foreign workers each year. Sessions’ recommendation was rejected by GOP and Democratic leaders in Congress, and so House Speaker Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI)’s December omnibus is enabling the president’s new executive action. In 2012, Obama bypassed laws against illegal immigration by awarding two-year work-permits to at least 800,000 younger foreign migrants who were brought here by their illegal immigrant parents. In 2015, the courts blocked his November 2014 amnesty plan to award work-permits to roughly 5 million resident migrants who have U.S.-born children. From 2009 to 2015, Obama also allowed at least 250,000 Central American migrants into the United States to request asylum or refugee status. In 2013, Obama added roughly 2 million extra foreign workers to the economy, while roughly 4 million young Americans began looking for work. “The objective here is to strip American workers of their protections from foreign labor embodied in the Green Card quotas” that are set by Congress, not the White House, Miano said. The annual award of Green Cards — and vital preliminary work-permits — is limited by quotas that mostly impact the many Indian and Chinese graduates who come to the United States as H-1B guest-workers, or who first arrive as students and later start working in the United States via the Optional Practical Training and H-1B programs. Roughly 650,000 foreign graduates are working in the United States for roughly 5 years each under the H-1B program. Roughly 120,000 foreign graduates of U.S. colleges are working in the United States for two years each via the OPT program, often called the ‘mini-H-1B program.’ Without this new regulation, most of those foreign graduates will return home after several years, forcing companies to hire U.S. graduates in their place. The foreign graduates typically get entry-level jobs that would otherwise go to new U.S. business graduates, designers, doctors, programmers, engineers and scientists. Also, the foreign graduates are used to replace mid-level American professionals once they seek mid-career pay-raises to help pay for mortgages and child-rearing. According to the pending regulation, “many of these changes are primarily aimed at improving the ability of U.S. employers to hire and retain [foreign] high-skilled workers who are beneficiaries of approved employment-based immigrant visa petitions and are waiting to become lawful permanent residents (LPRs), while increasing the ability of such [foreign] workers to seek promotions, accept lateral positions with current employers, change employers, or pursue other employment options.” The new policy also creates a large economic incentive for U.S. employers to hire foreign college-grads instead of new American college-grads. That’s because the policy will allow U.S. employers to hire foreign college graduates at very low salaries. The foreign graduates will gladly take those low-wage white-collar jobs because the new policy allows them to get deferred payments from the federal government — valuable permanent work-permits that are the first step on the golden pathway to Green Cards and citizenship. In contrast, employers can’t pay American graduates with this combination of low-salaries plus the federal promise of citizenship — because the Americans already have citizenship. That means employers must pay more money to hire American college-grads than they would to hire foreign college-grads. That puts a huge disadvantage on American graduates because they need higher salaries to pay off their expensive U.S. college debt. Miano slammed the new regulations, and said they reflect Obama’s preference for foreigners over Americans. “Notice that when foreign workers are going to lose their jobs, Obama has DHS make protecting their jobs the agency’s highest priority,” chiefly by minimizing enforcement of immigration laws, he told Breitbart News. But “when American workers lose their jobs to foreign workers, Obama does absolutely nothing,” he said. “We have a president with a very warped sense of priorities,” he added. The public can object to the new regulations, according to the DHS document. As we’ve been saying from day one here at The Daily Buzz, Obama is for everyone…except actual Americans.  He wants jobs and free handouts to illegal aliens.  But, he doesn’t give a damn about you or me.  He makes me want to vomit..  Happy New Year, Obama…tool..

Militiamen, ranchers in showdown for soul of Burns, OR

BURNS – The strangers carrying the whisper of danger arrived in the vast territory of the Harney Basin just before the holidays. Ammon Bundy once helped his father repulse the government in an armed showdown on a Nevada desert. He was Tasered for his effort. Ryan Payne, an electrician from Montana, joined that same standoff and boasted of organizing civilians into sniper squads that drew a bead on federal agents. And not long ago, Jon Ritzheimer worried the FBI with his threatening rants against Muslims in Arizona and elsewhere. Now, the men say, they are in Burns to help Dwight and Steven Hammond. The Hammonds are father and son ranchers, due to report to federal prison on Monday. They were convicted in 2012 of arson for lighting public land on fire adjacent to their ranch land south of Burns. They have been imprisoned once and must return for an additional term after federal appellate judges said they had been illegally sentenced the first time. Self-styled patriots and militiamen gathering in Burns don’t want that to happen, declaring the Hammonds’ imprisonment illegal under the U.S. Constitution. They have latched on to the Hammonds as their latest cause to stand against the federal government. “I am here now trying to empower and motivate the people of this community to take a stand against tyranny and show them that I will gladly stand with them,” Ritzheimer said. The Hammonds don’t want to be part of the outsiders’ cause, and neither do many in Harney County. But that hasn’t stopped the strangers from summoning help from militia groups across the country. They are vague about their intention and their plans, unsettling the community and putting law enforcement on edge. The militia plan a rally and a parade on Saturday, circling the county courthouse that houses the sheriff’s office. The militia members have been insisting that Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward create a sanctuary so the Hammonds will be immune from surrendering. Ward met with the militiamen and rejected that demand. The militia has since labeled him an “enemy of the people.” Ward said he has received emailed death threats among thousands of messages from across the country regarding the Hammonds. Two weeks ago, Bundy and Payne roused 60 or so local citizens to their cause at a community meeting. They rented the Memorial Building at the fairgrounds for the night. They taped themselves lecturing the locals on their rights, on the Constitution, and on their duty to protect themselves. The Harney County situation is the second time this year Oregon has been the national rallying point for militias. Last spring, miners fighting with the Bureau of Land Management over paperwork outside Medford found themselves enveloped with militia defenders. The miners finally issued a plea for militia members to go home. The militiamen did – but only after claiming they beat back the government. An administrative law judge temporarily stopped BLM action against the miners. But the activists carrying pocket editions of the Constitution with them to Harney County are better known for the spectacle in Nevada in spring 2014. The BLM was the bogeyman there too. Nevada showdown Militiamen by the hundreds flowed to Nevada that year to help rancher Cliven Bundy. The BLM was corralling his cattle that it said were trespassing on public land. The agency said Bundy hadn’t paid grazing fees for 20 years, amassing more than $1 million in bills. Payne, an Army veteran, came to the rancher’s defense. In later interviews, Payne said he was the “militia adviser” to Bundy. Payne helped array armed civilians against the federal agents. “We had counter-sniper positions on their sniper positions. We had at least one guy—sometimes two guys—per BLM agent in there,” Payne told a Montana weekly, the Independent. “If they made one wrong move, every single BLM agent in that camp would’ve died.” Ammon Bundy, Cliven Bundy’s third son, was there too. As the nation watched, the BLM called off the cattle collection and withdrew in the face of the armed militia. The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups across the country, said in a 2014 report on the Bundy standoff that the government’s retreat empowered the militiamen. Ryan Lenz with the law center was on the ground in Nevada and later interviewed Payne for the report. Lenz said the Harney County development isn’t surprising. “What’s happening is very much what everyone feared would happen in the aftermath of the Bundy standoff,” Lenz said. “The rule of law was suspended with the barrel of a gun.” Aiding the Hammonds Bundy and Payne say they met with both Dwight and Susan Hammond at their home in November. Bundy said he helped the ranchers move cows one day. The Hammonds initially accepted the militia’s offer of help to avoid prison, Bundy said. But the Hammonds changed their minds after being warned by federal prosecutors to stop communicating with the militia, Bundy wrote in a blog post. The Hammonds declined interview requests and didn’t respond to written questions about their dealings with the militiamen. A Boise lawyer representing the Hammonds said in a letter to the sheriff that Bundy didn’t speak for the ranchers and that they intended to surrender as required. Bundy and Payne and their associates are persisting, though. They explain in deliberate, calm tones their reasoning. The federal government claims title to most of the land in Harney County, the ninth largest county in the United States. Bundy and Payne maintain that Article 1, Section 8, Clause 17 of the U.S. Constitution limits what the federal government can own, and that the government’s claim to much of Harney County violates that limit. The federal government consequently has no authority to prosecute the Hammonds. Bundy and Payne, who said he has moved to Harney County, have pressed the matter on several fronts. They have insisted that Ward, the sheriff, protect the Hammonds. They have written other elected officials in the county and in Oregon asserting the same demand. Some residents have shown interest in the group’s cause. Locals voted seven of their own onto a new Harney County Committee of Safety, including ranchers, a retired fire chief, and a tax preparer. Payne and Bundy said the committee would decide how to address the Hammond conflict. But Bundy quickly created a website for the group and drafted a sharply-worded letter to the sheriff for the committee to issue.

And the story continues..  To read the rest of it, click on the text above.  Obviously, the reportet of this local Oregon rag is a liberal.  He cites the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) which has been discredited, and which calls organizations it doesn’t politically agree with, like evangelical Christians and the Tea Party, as “hate groups,” and yet it doesn’t have that same designation for the New Black Panther Party.  Yeah…exactly.  In the case of the Bundys in NV, they most definitely had a legitimate beef with the out-of-control, fascist BLM which showed up to bully the Bundys with armored vehicles, their own BLM paramilitary force complete with ARs, snipers, and so on.  All the BLM had to do was to knock on their door and say, “hey..  We have a court-directed document that says you need to pay this fine/back tax/grazing fee for your cattle…whatever.  And, then the Bundy’s could go to court and make their case there.  At MOST, they could have issued an arrest warrant and had the local sheriff arrest him and put him in the local county jail until his court date.  Even that would be WAY over the top.  But, NOOOOO..  The BLM nazis had to show up with this military armada, bully the little rancher, and intimidate him, tase his son and so on.  No wonder these militia guys showed up!  Don’t blame them one bit!  That is a textbook example of why we have our Second Amendment.  It’s not for hunting and target practice as the liberal politicians would have you believe.  It’s there so we can protect ourselves and our loved ones..and, to protect we-the-people against an out-of-control (federal or state) government.  And, if it ever came to it…to take that government back by force if it didn’t abide by the Constitution (and Bill of Rights) that it swore to uphold.  That’s the sorta thing that makes the establishment a little nervous…and why they are for gun control.  They don’t like an armed citizenry.  Neither did Hitler.

The Numbers Are in: Black Lives Matter Is Wrong about Police

Ever since the explosion of the Black Lives Matter movement, Americans have been bombarded with assertions that black men face a unique and dangerous threat — not from members of their own community but from the very law enforcement officers who are sworn to “serve and protect” them. Hashtags such as #DrivingWhileBlack and #WalkingWhileBlack have perpetuated a narrative that black Americans risk being gunned down by police simply because of the color of their skin. Using individual anecdotes of police misconduct and the now-discredited “hands up, don’t shoot” rallying cry, Black Lives Matter has built a case that American police are out of control. The conservative response is clear: While no one believes the police are perfect, on the whole they tend to use force appropriately to protect their own lives and the lives of others. Moreover, racial disparities in the use of force are largely explained by racial disparities in criminality. Different American demographics commit crimes at different rates, so it stands to reason that those who commit more crimes will confront the police more often. Yes, there are rogue officers — and those rogue officers should be prosecuted — but the police are still a force for good in our society. In response to the allegations of Black Lives Matter activists, the Washington Post launched an unprecedented, case-by-case study of police shootings. After a year of research, the data are in, and they confirm the conservative position: The police use force mainly to protect human life, the use of force against unarmed suspects is rare, and the use of force against black Americans is largely proportional to their share of the violent crime rate. According the Post, as of December 24, American police had fatally shot 965 people in 2015. (The Guardian, in the midst of its own study, reports a slightly higher number of shootings). 564 of those killed were armed with a gun, 281 were armed with another weapon, and 90 were unarmed. In fully three-quarters of shootings, “police were under attack or defending someone who was.” But what of race? The kinds of shootings that launched the Black Lives Matter movement — white police officers killing unarmed black men — represent “less than 4 percent of fatal police shootings.” The Post does its best to hype the racial injustice of this statistic, proclaiming that while “black men make up only 6 percent of the U.S. population, they account for 40 percent of the unarmed men shot to death by police this year.” But that claim is misleading on a number of counts. Crime doesn’t break down on neat, proportionate demographic lines. Criminals are overwhelmingly male (police killed very few women this year, but no one argues that law enforcement is sexist), and violent criminals are disproportionately black. In fact, blacks “commit homicide at close to eight times the rate of whites and Hispanics combined.” Even worse, “among males between the ages of 14 and 17, the interracial homicide commission gap is nearly tenfold.” In 2014, for example, while black Americans constituted only about 13 percent of the population, they represented a majority of the homicide and robbery arrests. 82 percent of all gun deaths in the black community are from homicide. For whites, 77 percent of gun deaths are suicides. Given these disturbing disparities, no rational person would expect police shootings to precisely track with demographics. Police follow crime, and they tend to operate in high-crime areas. It would be alarming if there were statistically significant racial variations in the use of force even after adjusting for crime rate, but the Post’s report doesn’t make this distinction. Even the “hugely disproportionate” ratio — “3 in 5” — of blacks and Hispanics shot to death after “exhibiting less threatening behavior” than brandishing a gun isn’t out of line with violent-crime rates. The report does highlight areas where law-enforcement agencies could do better — improved training in handling fleeing or mentally ill suspects could save lives, for example — and while police are generally responsible in the use of force, that doesn’t mean that all use of force is lawful. There are individual racist cops, and there are departments that will close ranks behind corrupt colleagues. But the chances of an innocent black man being gunned down by racist cops are vanishingly small. And that is good news indeed. While I am no fan of social movements built on false narratives, Black Lives Matter did inspire the Post’s valuable study — a study that, fairly read, should defuse national tensions. It won’t, however. The narrative is too strong, and too many powerful people have too much to gain by ratcheting up racial tensions. So Black Lives Matter will likely roll on, and still more black Americans will be taught to hate and fear law enforcement, fed on a steady diet of lies about their own country. America is a better place than they’ve been led to believe. Radical racial politics will only make it worse. — David French is an attorney and Army Reserve officer (Major) who was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Iraq

Gertz: China preps for space warfare

Following recent tests of anti-satellite missiles and near-space hypersonic vehicles, China’s military will soon create a new Space Force within the People’s Liberation Army, a sign Beijing is preparing for future space warfare. Military analysts say there has been no official announcement of the new space warfare unit; however, unofficial sources in China revealed the unit will be part of a new Strategic Support Forces service that will include nuclear missiles — currently under the Second Artillery Force — along with an electronic information forces, cyber warfare units and electronic and signals intelligence. The shift to space and information warfare is part of a major military reorganization that has been underway in China for the past several years. It’s designed to transform the once ground forces-heavy PLA into a high-technology force. China conducted the sixth test of a hypersonic strike vehicle on Nov. 23, after having carried out an anti-satellite missile test on Oct. 30. Both weapons are part of China’s large-scale high-technology arms buildup. A Chinese Internet military blogger posted photos of a purported flight test on Dec. 13 in northwestern China of what was described as either a missile defense interceptor test or anti-satellite missile test. As reported by Inside the Ring on Oct. 15, the annual report of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission warned that “China is pursuing a broad and robust array of counterspace capabilities, which includes direct-ascent anti-satellite missiles, co-orbital anti-satellite systems, computer network operations, ground-based satellite jammers and directed energy weapons.” “The Strategic Support Forces appear to have been inspired by the U.S. Strategic Command, which also controls missiles, space assets and cyberwarfare,” said Rick Fisher, a Chinese military affairs specialist. “It appears that the Space Force will control China’s military and commercial satellite program, its manned space program plus an increasing number of space combat programs.” The new unit also is expected to control China’s future strategic missile defense forces. Mr. Fisher, with the International Assessment and Strategy Center, said in addition to ground-launched anti-satellite missiles, future PLA space weapons may include aircraft-launched ASATs, laser-armed low earth orbit combat platforms, low earth orbit bombers and dual-use civilian military space shuttles. Mr. Fisher said there are increasing signs that China plans to send astronauts to land on the moon in the late 2020s to early 2030s, and the missions will include military capabilities. “It is also possible that the first commander of the Space Force has real ‘Star Wars’ experience,” Mr. Fisher said. “An unofficial list of new PLA commanders listed Maj. Gen. Li Shangfu as the first commander of the Space Force.” Gen. Li currently is deputy chief of the PLA General Armaments Department and the manned space program, and is likely chief of the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, where the PLA has carried out early ASAT tests, perhaps including its first successful satellite interception on Jan. 11, 2007. That missile test against a Chinese weather satellite created tens of thousands of pieces of space debris that still threaten both manned and unmanned space flights. Mr. Fisher believes the primary mission of the new Space Force is “to achieve control of low earth orbit in order to defeat the United States on earth.” “There should be no ‘civil’ space cooperation with China as long as there is any chance its exposure to U.S. space technology could help China to kill Americans,” he told Inside the Ring.

Agreed, Bill!!  Award winning  columnist and author, Bill Gertz, was the author of that article.  Bill is one of the most connected defense journalists inside the D.C. Beltway, and he knows his stuff.  As an Army filed grade officer myself, I recommend anything he writes,  and have many of his books in my personal library.  Here at The Daily Buzz we’ve been warning readers of the threat that China presents to our national security from day one.  For every space launch we do here in the U.S., China does about a hundred.  We’re falling woefully behind…and had better start stepping things up.

Agents nab Pakistanis with terrorist connections crossing U.S. border

The Border Patrol nabbed two Pakistani men with ties to terrorism at the U.S.-Mexico border in September in the latest instance of illegal immigrants from so-called “special interest countries” using the southern border as a point of entry to the U.S. Muhammad Azeem and Mukhtar Ahmad, both in their 20s and from Gujrat, were caught Sept. 20 by agents south of San Diego and just over the international border from Tijuana. When agents checked their identities through databases they got hits on both of them: Mr. Ahmad popped up as an associate of a known or suspected terrorist, while Mr. Azeem’s information had been shared by a foreign government for intelligence purposes. Both men had been processed two months earlier by immigration officials in Panama, suggesting they took advantage of smuggling networks or other routes increasingly used by Central American illegal immigrants to sneak into the U.S. It comes as lawmakers on Capitol Hill are increasingly worried about potential terrorists gaining entry to the U.S. through its southern border or taking advantage of lax screening elsewhere in the immigration system. “The southern land border remains vulnerable to intrusion and exists as a point of extreme vulnerability,” Rep. Duncan Hunter, California Republican, wrote in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson last week demanding answers about how many people in the FBI’s terrorist screening database have been caught at the border. “Evidently there are criminal organizations and individuals with the networks and knowhow to facilitate illegal entry into the United States without regard for one’s intentions or status on a terrorist watchlist,” Mr. Hunter wrote. “The detention of the two Pakistani nationals underscores the fact that any serious effort to secure our homeland must include effective border security and immigration enforcement.” The FBI, whose agents were brought in to interview the two men, declined to talk about the case, saying it had “no information to provide.” The Border Patrol turned the men over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which said they have been in custody since September and are being held while they face immigration court proceedings. Other incidents have raised questions about the extent to which terrorists can take advantage of smuggling networks in Latin America. A year before the two Pakistani men were caught, the Border Patrol apprehended four Kurdish men who said they were part of the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Front/Party, which is listed by the U.S. as a terrorist organization. Mr. Johnson, the Homeland Security secretary, said the four were actually members of the Kurdish Workers Party, which is also listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government.

Controversial ‘stolen valor’ column sparks outrage in small Pennsylvania town

Outrage is growing in a small northeastern Pennsylvania town after a local columnist lied about being a veteran to score free drinks at a bar — forcing the newspaper’s publisher to apologize Tuesday. A Dec. 23 column in The Weekender — published by The Times Leader Media Group and owned by parent company Civitas Media — began in part as follows: “I discovered the secret to getting a few drinks without having a vagina: just say you’re a veteran. Everyone wants to buy a vet a free drink.” The column, titled, “free drinks come at a price,” was written by Justin Adam Brown, who went on to brag about tricking a Vietnam veteran into believing he had served in Iraq so he could receive free drinks. Brown wrote that he accepted drinks from the unnamed veteran after telling him, “I fought in Iraq.” He joked about how his friend also sold a camouflage shirt to the veteran for $100, falsely claiming he got the shirt from President George W. Bush. The shirt was purchased at Macy’s, according to Brown. The column — which serves residents of Wilkes Barre and Scranton, Pa. — immediately sparked outrage among members of the community, including veterans who accused the writer of “stolen valor,” acccording to the Times-Tribune newspaper. The column was eventually pulled from the newspaper’s website after John Dawe, president of Dawe Consulting and a local activist, filed a petition, demanding an apology from the writer, editor and publisher. “The content of the article is offensive on so many levels,” Dawe told Tuesday. On Dec. 27, Brown and his editor, Sarah Haase, issued separate apologies on The Weekender’s website. “Last week, I wrote a column about a situation my friends and I experienced at a bar,” Brown wrote. “My recounting of that situation had the unintended consequence of hurting veterans.” “We never intended for anyone to believe we were veterans,” he said. “An intoxicated patron at the bar solicited us, and even though we told him we weren’t veterans, we ultimately played along after being harassed and feeling uncomfortable.” Haase took responsibilty for allowing the column to go to print, writing on the site, “I’d like to apologize to all those who were hurt and offended by a recent Sorry Mom and Dad column that appeared in Weekender after receiving the green light for publication by me.” “The piece, which former columnist Justin Adam Brown wrote, does not reflect my personal values or morals. I do not condone Justin’s behavior, however, I was the editor who made the difficult decision to print his column under the belief that Justin had a right to say the things he said,” Haase wrote. After receiving an apology, Dawe said the petition is calling for leadership at The Times Leader Media Group to pledge to follow ethical practices. “We’re calling for them to do a renewed commitment to ethical journalism,” Dawe said. Local businesses, meanwhile, condemned the column and vowed not to advertise in it. “R bar and grill Nanticoke will NEVER advertise or distribute this paper again. It’s a disgrace to all of NEPA. pathetic!,” Lauren Temarantz Maga, owner of R Bar and Grill, wrote on her Facebook page, the Times-Tribune reported. In an interview Tuesday, Doug Olsson, the Times Leader Media Group’s publisher, told that, “the apology is not enough.” “We recognize that we made some errors in judgment here and there’s a couple things we’re doing internally to make sure this doesn’t happen in the future,” Olsson told He said in the future the paper will require two editors — not one — to read and approve all columns in The Weekender before publication. “Our thought process is two judgments are better than one,” he said. “We’re also investigating some training for our newsroom staff in terms of sensitivity to the community and various groups.” Olsson went on to apologize to any veterans the column may have offended, saying, “We’re going to work to try and win that trust of the community back.” Neither Brown nor Haase were immediately available for comment when contacted Tuesday. According to the Times Tribune, Brown was laid off in November as a full-time staffer but continued to write his weekly “Sorry mom and dad” column.

Unbelievable..  The only reason this paper and sleazy journalist apologized is because they were caught, and are in damage control mode.  These liberal media tools look down at the common folks, and in this case, vets.  Shame on them!!  As a vet myself, I’m hugely offended and join the good folks there in Pennsylvania in their outrage.  And, the only way this local paper can win that trust of the community back” is to fire that journalist…and maybe the editor that approved such a sleazy piece.  Methinks that’d be a good start.  Just sayin..  We’ll keep an eye on this story and let you know if there are any developments..    Unreal..

Powerful Solar Storm to Hit Earth Before New Year’s Eve

Here’s one way to end the year on a bright note. A powerful solar storm set to slam Earth today will make for stunning views of the Northern Lights just before New Year’s Eve. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center said the “strong” storm could allow the Northern Lights to dip as far south as Oregon and Illinois. NOAA classifies solar storms on a scale of one to five (one being the weakest; five being the most severe). Today’s storm is forecast to be a G3 event, meaning it could have the strength to cause fluctuations in some power grids, intermittent radio blackouts in higher latitudes and possible GPS issues. The storm is the result of a coronal mass ejection — basically a flare of charged protons and electrons — that burst from the sun earlier this week. Once they reach Earth, the particles interact with the planet’s magnetic field to paint the sky in dazzling colors. NOAA predicts the effects of today’s storm could linger into New Year’s Eve.

We’ll, of course, be monitoring this.. Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) are serious business and screw up all sorts of systems and services we depend upon..

California Police May Confiscate Guns without Notice to Owner Starting January 1

Beginning January 1, police in California may confiscate firearms from gun owners thought to be a danger to themselves or others without giving the owner any notice. This is the result of the implementation of “gun violence restraining orders” (GVROs), which go into effect New Year’s Day. According to KPCC, GVROs “could be issued without prior knowledge of the person. In other words, a judge could issue the order without ever hearing from the person in question, if there are reasonable grounds to believe the person is a threat based on accounts from the family and police.” And since the order can be issued without the gun owner even being present to defend him or herself, confiscation can commence without any notice to the gun owner once the order is issued. To be fair, Los Angeles Police Department Assistant Chief Michael Moore does not use the word “confiscate” when talking about confiscating firearms. Rather, Moore says, “The law gives us a vehicle to cause the person to surrender their weapons, to have a time out, if you will.” KPCC reports that “California law already bans people from possessing guns if they’ve committed a violent crime or were involuntarily committed to a mental health facility.” And now, with GVROs, California law allows judges to bar people from possessing guns even if they have not committed a violent crime or were involuntarily committed. Because of this, Gun Owners of California Executive Director Sam Paredes warns that GVROs “may create a situation where law-abiding gun owners are put in jeopardy.”

Gee…ya think?!?  Glad I don’t live in the People’s Republic of California!! This GVRO nonsense is SO unconstitutional.  Hopefully some persons or organizations who have “standing” to file a lawsuit against this crap will do so.
